Social Networks and the Mental Health of Haitian Immigrants
Guerda Nicolas, Angela DeSilva, Gemima St. Louis, and Linda Marc
Book details:
Haitian immigration to the U.S. is steadily increasing, with Haitians comprising the 3rd largest ethnic group in the U.S.

Stressors of discrimination and prejudice, combined with acculturation, may predispose Haitians to particular mental health problems. Scarce existing research suffers from a rudimentary understanding of Haitian life, and little is known about family and community life and acculturation.

The authors aim to elucidate the lives of Haitian immigrants through research at the intersection of culture, social networks, and mental health. In addition, recommendations for providing culturally sensitive and effective services are included.
